Shore of Big Lake Wassookeag at Sunset

The Maine Highlands Landscape at Lake Wassookeag

The Maine Highlands, as shown here at Lake Wassookeag in Dexter, Maine, is a diverse landscape with valleys, hills, and mountains, lakes, ponds, brooks, streams and rivers. It shines in all seasons. The visual story that is told can depend much on the time of day, the quality of light, and the selection of lenses that a visual artist chooses to use. What makes this image stand out, aside form th striking diversity of autumn colors, is due to the lens that was used to capture the scene. It provides a view and perspective that even a local may have a difficult time placing. With lenses, a wide angle exaggerates distances whereas a telephoto compresses them. This image was captured using a long telephoto which moved the foreground and the background closer together. It compressed them, making the background appear larger and closer.
